Grateful Dead

Grateful Dead came onto the music scene in San Francisco Bay area in 1965. The band was known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, jazz, psychedelia, and space rock. They were also well known for live performances of long musical improvisation. The band began their career as The Warlocks in 1964. The charter members of the Grateful Dead were: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann (who then used the stage name Bill Sommers). Lesh was the last member to join the Warlocks before they became the Grateful Dead in 1965: he replaced Dana Morgan Jr. who had played bass for a few gigs. With the exception of McKernan, the core of the band stayed together for 30 years, until Garcia's death in 1995.

The faithful fans known as the Dead Heads helped keep the spirit of the sixties alive in the decades that followed with their devotion to the band by following them everywhere they went. It was not uncommon for a Dead Head to plan their vacation around the tour schedule of the band or just take a trip across the country just to see them play. It was a sad day when Jerry left this world. But be assured, Heaven is having some long jamming sessions

What a Long Strange Trip it has been!
